Attendance Policy
Attendance is required at all rehearsals and performances. Absences fall under the following three categories:
EXCUSED Excused absences include death in the family or illness. In case of a death in the family, the directory must be notified by the parents / guardian. In case of illness, the student must provide a doctor's note or be counted on the school's absence list.
SPECIAL CASE Special case absences will be determined on an individual basis. The student must complete a Special Case absence request form and have it approved by the directory PRIOR to the absence. If not approved PRIOR to the absence, the student will be counted as unexcused. Special Case absences will be considered based on previous attendance, behavior, and participation. Special Case absences will not affect a student's grade, but will result in an unexcused absence for performance purposed because of lost rehearsal time.
UNEXCUSED Unexcused absences include any absence that does not fall in the above two categories. Unexcused absences result in loss of performance privileges for the week in which the absence occurs. Missing a rehearsal or performance for unexcused reasons will affect the student's grade. (See grading policy for more information.)
TARDY Tardiness will be addressed in the following manner: 1st - Warning and a record will be made of how many minutes student is late. 2nd - Student will make up time practicing music or marching with their squad leader or a staff member for time equal to the minutes late for both the first and second tardy. 3rd - A call will be made to parents. Student will make up time practicing music or marching with their squad leader or a staff member for time DOUBLE to the minutes late for the first, second, and third tardy
NOTE: Students who participate in other school sanctioned extra-curricular activities will need to complete a Special Case absence form. As a general rule, work, scheduled doctor appointments, or any other non-school events will not be excused as a Special Case.
SUMMER REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE POLICY The week of band camp is the most crucial week of the summer. Therefore band camp absences will adhere to the same guidelines as listed in the above attendance policy. Please schedule family vacations and other summer activities as to avoid conflicts with band rehearsals.
GRADING POLICY Grades are divided into three (3) categories as follows:
50% Performance 25% Participation 25% Tests / Quizzes See handbook for further details
DISCIPLINE POLICY Proper behavior is essential in order to have an effective rehearsal. Before any action is taken a student will be warned to cease the inappropriate behavior. Any misbehavior thereafter will result in one or more of the following actions:
- · COUNT DOWN
- · LOSS OF PARTICIPATION GRADE
- · REMOVAL FROM REHEARSAL
- · REMOVAL FROM PERFORMANCE
- · DISCIPLINE REFERRAL
- · DISMISSAL FROM BAND
NOTE: It is not the director or staff that chooses to discipline a student. Instead, it is the student that is responsible for the actions. All consequences will be a direct result of the STUDENT'S own choices.
DRESS Students will adhere to the Eastern High School dress code at all times.
TRAVEL All Eastern High School and Eastern High School Band rules will be implemented at all times during travel. Any use of drugs, tobacco, or alcohol is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Students who abuse Eastern High School's substance policies will lose performance privileges, may be sent home at their own cost, and are subject to consequences outlined in the Eastern High School hand book.
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES As part of the high school band program, some students will be selected to participate in a leadership role. When applying to be a leader within the band organization, the student applicant acknowledges that he/she will be asked to perform special duties that require extra time. For this reason, leaders may be asked to come to rehearsal early or add additional rehearsals if necessary. This time will be kept to a reasonable and minimal level. When accepting a leadership role, the student recognizes that this extra time is REQUIRED and will be counted as such.
